Tracking the Draft

Season 2 - Episode 17

March 24, 2021

The Stars of tomorrow are discovered here, Every Thursday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSNCraig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more.

This week it was story time and scouting tips from Craig as we took questions from listeners and viewers. We started with a topical question about officiating after NHL Referee Tim Peel was fired for what was caught on a hot mic and then got into some scouting topics. From top college free agents to anyone NHL ready in this year's draft to who to scout players strictly on video. Funny draft interview experiences with one really unique event at Todd Harvey's farm. Some funny stories about being at the draft table, Autu Raty's fall from being the top prospect and favourite college and junior rinks. We had a l to of fun with this one.

Season 2 - Episode 16

March 17, 2021

The Stars of tomorrow are discovered here, Every Thursday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSNCraig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more.

We focused on 3 guys who likely won't be top 5 or top 10 picks but have the potential to make some people ask, 'how'd they get him there?' Logan Stankoven was purchased as an NFT for $520 in the scout auction and while he's dropped in a lot of rankings, Craig always comes away impressed by the Kamloops Blazer of the WHL.

Cameron Whynot has already doubled his point production from his rookie season with the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL, and Craig sees a current Toronto Maple Leaf blue liner when he watches him play. While not physical, Whynot is steadily getting better in all areas. Matt Coronato simply scores goals. 36 in 39 games this season with the Chicago Steel of the USHL and Craig relates how some scouts complain that all players do is score goals with a hilarious story about Ken Holland.

We also debated a top 5 pick for $1000 in the USHL vs 10 NFTs for $100 from rounds 3-7 and beyond. I asked Craig about his scouting plan the rest of the season and how to spot subtle plays by skaters or goalies.

Next week, it's Craig's Counsel where you can ask a question about a scouting tip or a story from his career. Email me
trackingthedraft@gmail.com and we'll add your question to the list we already have going.

Season 2 - Episode 15

March 10, 2021

The Stars of tomorrow are discovered here, Every Thursday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSNCraig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more.

We kicked things off discussing that a July draft looks like it's happening and how that impacts everyone involved. Don't ask Craig to put an asterisk beside this draft though, everyone is in the same situation. We also chatted about potential changes to the NHL draft lottery and whether it's being motivated by the 'good of the game' or 'the good of my team' when it comes to GMs in the NHL.

The three prospects we profiled are Sasha Pastujov, one of the best passers in the draft and a guy heading to Notre Dame of the NCAA next season. Same Tuomaala of Karpat J20, a winger who's never met a shot he's afraid to take, but it's not just the shot, it's the positions he gets himself in to take those shots. Zachary L'Heureux is a player that maybe isn't the same type of power forward that a guy like Josh Anderson or Tom Wilson, but he still has plenty of power and skill in his game. Think of a cross between Matthew Tkachuk and Brad Marchand.

I also brought up with Craig about being patient as a General Manager, whether that's in the NHL or the UFHL or any fantasy hockey franchise. Knowing your own team better than anyone is the first step, which allows you to be patient or pounce on an opportunity to improve your team.

Season 2 - Episode 14

March 3, 2021

The Stars of tomorrow are discovered here, Every Thursday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSNCraig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more.

The future of the 2021 NHL draft is up in the air and Craig and I discussed a few different possibilities as well as 3 top notch players for whenever it's held. William Eklund is having a terrific season as an draft aged player in the SHL. Corson Ceulemans reminds Craig of a current Golden Knight, while Carson Lambos took on huge responsibilities on the back in in Winnipeg last year for the WHL's Ice.

I also asked Craig if there is a clear cut #1 for 2021 and we chatted about an expansion team in the
Ultimate Fantasy Hockey League selling for $10,000 USD, and of course this isn't your Dad's fantasy league. We are talking NFTs on the Zilliqa Blockchain so these are digital assets, and it's about to blow up!

Season 2 - Episode 13

February 25, 2021

The Stars of tomorrow are discovered here, Every Thursday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSNCraig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more.

This week's show was awesome as it was mostly about goalies. We took a look at a sure fire first rounder and some others who will be knocking on the door as well as a NCAA free agent who's nickname should be shut out.

Jesper Wallstedt is a Swedish goalie who will go in the first round, it's just a matter of whether it's inside or outside the top 10. He's playing in the SHL right now. Sebastian Cossa is the back stop for the Edmonton Oil Kings and some have him ranked in the first round. He has massive size which scouts drool over with goalies. Triston Lennox just missed being drafted last year and despite being undrafted, he's the Toronto Marlies roster for AHL games this year, a first for me to see a situation like that. Dryden Mckay is currently stonewalling the WCHA of the NCAA. His Minnesota State Mavericks are undefeated in conference play and he has 8 shuts outs this season.

We also touched on CHL players in the AHL, NHL & UFHL expansion and some NHL rookies.

Season 2 - Episode 12

February 17, 2021

The Stars of tomorrow are discovered here, Every Thursday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSNCraig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more.

Craig will be unveiling his top 5 for the 2021 NHL draft on TSN this Thursday, but today I threw some names at him that might be on that list. We discussed the great all around play that coaches crave from Dylan Guenther and Matty Beniers as well as the potential that blue liners Owen Power, Simon Edvinsson and Luke Hughes possess, which each one different from the next.

We also chatted about the 2021 draft, the age and the potential for one exceptional player in the AHL each year. Hint, Craig railed against my suggestion!!! We discussed how good entry level contracts can be huge in the NHL and UFHL (no fans to complain about rebuilds) providing those players can play, the NHL is not a development league.

Season 2 - Episode 11

January 20, 2021

The Stars of tomorrow are discovered here, Every Thursday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSNCraig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more.

This week we discussed the future of the 2021 NHL draft. Will it happen this year or be pushed back to next year, and what kind of format would that look like? To me the NHL has an opportunity to do the right thing by the prospects, scouts and teams by pushing it back a year and then making it a back to back weekend summer event. As for the players in 2021 we chatted about there was a common theme between Luke Hughes, Matthew Beniers and Mackie Samoskevich. We also weighed in on some of the moves Duckman's Domination made in the UFHL this week that involved adding picks and prospects that Craig recommended.

The Stars of tomorrow are discovered here, Every Thursday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSNCraig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more.

Craig is freshly out of the bubble that was the World Junior Hockey Championship in Edmonton and we recapped the tournament, from a stellar gold medal game from the Americans to some individual players excelled.

We also discussed scouting strategies and how you need to be fluid and adaptable in your thinking if you are going to have success. We profiled 3 players from 3 different countries as we try and sort out what kind of season there might be up until the draft for prospects.

We profiled Simon Robertsson of Sweden, Jimi Suomi of Finland and Logan Stankoven of Canada.

The Stars of tomorrow are discovered here, Every Thursday former NHL GM, Stanley Cup Champion and Director of Scouting with TSNCraig Button and I explore prospects for the NHL Draft. From Top Shelf Talent to The Next Wave to Time Machine and more.

This week Craig and I focused on the upcoming World Junior Championship. From what 2021 draft prospects to watch for to the Oilers, Flames and Canucks prospects in the tournament as we wrapped up our Canadian NHL team focus. We also discussed how trades happen and one hilarious story about a trade request to Craig when he was the GM of the Flames. We wrapped things up by chatting about some key players for a few countries who are and are not in this tournament. Craig and his TSN colleagues will have a tournament preview show on Christmas Eve.
